Karachi Biennale 2017

Getz Pharma was a proud sponsor of ‘Karachi Biennale 2017’, the largest international contemporary art exhibition in Pakistan. The event featured artwork, performances, screenings and panel discussions by over 140 international and Pakistani artists. Boasting 12 locations around the city with free entry, the Karachi Biennale fostered a sense of ownership and desire to enjoy art by bringing it into the public realm. The works with their local roots and their locations in often historic sites, created a resounding link between the city and its inhabitants. The 12 venues chosen to display the artwork included:

• NJV Government Higher Secondary School • Karachi School of Art • VM Art Gallery of the ZVMG Rangoonwala Trust • 63 Commissariat Road • Capri Cinema • Jamshed Memorial Hall • Pioneer Book House • Sadequain Gallery, Frere Hall • Claremont House • Mahvash and Jahangir Siddiqui Art Gallery, Alliance Française • FOMMA DHA Art Center • IVS Gallery, Indus Valley School of Art & Architecture

Doors were open to all exhibits daily from 22nd October 2017 till 5th November 2017. This project was organized by the Karachi Biennale Trust, a non-profit registered trust set up to organize the Karachi Biennale every two years.

Events such as these foster public engagement with art by creating opportunities for local audiences to experience and appreciate diverse forms of contemporary art, while increasing exposure of our artists. Such projects encourage collaboration within the artists’ community, as well as between institutions and artists. The inclusion of international artists leads to the sharing of local ideas, and creates the possibility to incorporate new ideas. With the success of Karachi Biennale 2017, the organizers are now aiming to expand the next edition, bringing more artwork throughout the city.
