Five Medication Safety Tips for Older Adults
As We Grow Older, Medicine Safety Matters Even More
Whether you are in your 60s, 70s, or beyond, taking medicines wisely is essential for maintaining health and preventing complications.
With age, our bodies change – the liver and kidneys may not process medicines as efficiently as before. That’s why older adults are more likely to experience side effects or drug interactions.
At Getz Pharma, our mission is to promote the safe and effective use of medicines at every stage of life.
Here are five essential safety tips to help older adults use medicines wisely and safely.
1. Take Medicines as Prescribed and Stay in Touch with Your Healthcare Provider
Your medicines work best when taken exactly as directed.
- Take your medicines regularly and follow your doctor’s instructions.
- Never take prescription medicines not prescribed for you.
- Do not skip doses or stop your medicine without medical advice, even if you feel better.
- Avoid changing doses on your own. Every medicine is tested for a specific dosing range.
- If you face difficulty remembering doses, talk to your pharmacist – they can suggest reminder apps to help.
Remember: The best medicine won’t work unless taken correctly.
2. Store Medicines Properly and Check Expiry Dates
Proper storage helps ensure your medicines remain safe and effective.
- Keep medicines in a cool, dry place, away from sunlight and moisture.
- Never store medicines in your bathroom cabinet or car, where temperature fluctuates.
- Some medicines require refrigeration – check the label or ask your pharmacist.
- Always store medicines out of reach of children.
- Regularly check expiry dates and dispose of expired or unused medicines safely.
Expired or improperly stored medicines may lose effectiveness or cause harm.
3. Be Aware of Possible Interactions and Side Effects
Even everyday foods and drinks can affect how your medicines work.
- Avoid grapefruit juice with certain medicines – it can cause dangerous interactions.
- Be cautious with alcohol, which may increase drowsiness or affect coordination.
- Discuss all prescription, OTC, herbal, and dietary supplements with your healthcare provider.
- Some side effects (like dizziness or memory problems) may resemble aging symptoms – ask your doctor if your medicines could be the cause.
- Always read your medicine labels and review special instructions from your doctor or pharmacist.
Ask: ‘Could this symptom be from my medicine?’ when something feels unusual.
4. Keep an Updated Medication List
Maintain a complete and up-to-date list of everything you take:
- Prescription medicines
- Over-the-counter products (painkillers, cold medicines)
- Vitamins and herbal supplements
Include:
- The medicine name, dose, and timing
- The prescriber’s name and reason for use
Keep one copy at home and one in your wallet, purse, or phone.
Show it to every healthcare provider, including dentists, physiotherapists, and pharmacists, to prevent interactions and duplication.
